It is with pleasure that I was able to accept the invitation of Dr David Tweats to join the scientific advisory panel of the PredTox project. As the PredTox project is mainly concerned with the application of genomics in toxicology the experience I bring of most relevance is that of the application of genomics in toxicology.
My experience with genomics dates back to approximately 1998 when I became aware of the development of the microarray in the Stanford laboratories of Prof. P.O. Brown at UCSF. Following their published MGuide designs we built a microarrayer at the MRC Toxicology Unit, gathered a collection of EST clones and started work. Since then we have used genomics in a variety of disease and toxicological models. In the process we have gained extensive experience in the production and use of microarrays and in the analysis of the data. Our experience in bioinformatics is built from the programming level upwards. We are still making and using microarrays in a number of formats, and use them in applications than go beyond the narrow confines of transcriptomics.
